Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis was born in 1944 and is known as just Tony Orlando. Orlando is a singer, songwriter, producer, music executive and an actor. He might well be best known for his 1970's work as Tony Orlando and Dawn.

Orlando formed the doowop group The Five Gents in 1959 at the age of 15, with whom he recorded demos, and got the attention of music publisher and producer Don Kirshner.  At the age of 17, in 1961, Orlando had his first hit with the song "Ding Dong" on the MILO record label. Kirshner hired him to write songs as part New York's thriving Brill Building songwriting community, along with other up and coming songwriters such as Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann, Bobby Darin and Connie Francis.

In 1969, Orlando signed Barry Manilow to his first recording contract with Bell Records. He also worked with The Yardbirds, James Taylor, Grateful Dead, Blood Sweat and Tears and Laura Nyro.
