Tony Orlando was born Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis in 1944.Durning the 1960's he recorded with only moderate success, he scored three Top 40 hits, two in 1961 and another in 1961 as the lead singer of a group called Wind.
During the 1960's Orlando became a producer and well respected music executive with Columbia Records.
While working as a music executive, Orlando received the song Candida, a song that had been turned down by other producers and singers. Originally he could not lend his name to the song, as he was working for April-Blackwood and recording under his name would be a conflict of interest. After producer Hank Medress insisted Orlando dub his voice over the male vocals on the original track, Bell Records released the single as being performed by the band Dawn in an effort to protect Orlando's position.
The background singers on the track were Cynthia Weil, Linda November, Jay Siegel and Toni Wine. That song hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number on on Cashbox Top 100. Then Orlando wanted to do more and the studio group recorded the album Candida in 1970. That album contained the number one hit Knock Three Times.
Bell Records was desperate to have a real-life act to promote Dawn's records. Orlando asked former Motown/Stax backing vocalists Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson to become Dawn.
