Gerald Joseph Mulligan was born in 1927 and was known as a jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger. Mulligan is primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists. He could play the instrument with a light and airy tone in the time of cool jazz. As an arranger he worked with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis and Stan Kenton. Mulligan's piano less quartet of the early 1950s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups of all time.
